Welcome NEW Education Director

Cantor Regina Heit

We are pleased to welcome Cantor Regina Heit to Temple Sinai as our Education Director. Cantor Heit is an accomplished educator with many years of proven creative successes. She will use her education and teaching experience to work with our families and teachers so that our students have the best possible NextDOR experience this year.

Cantor Heit was ordained by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion School of Sacred Music in 1981. She has served pulpits, both as a Cantor and as a religious school director, in Evansville, Indiana, New City, New York, and Denver, Colorado. Teaching and working with B’nei Mitzvah students is her passion.

Among Cantor’s many other professional accomplishments, she served for five years on the Executive Committee of the Colorado Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice and was the Biblical Hebrew professor at the Saint John Vianney Catholic Seminary in Denver.

Cantor Heit was born in Japan and grew up in Hawaii, Maryland, Virginia, Alaska, and California before returning to Hawaii to finish high school. She and her husband, Matthew, recently relocated from Denver to Pittsburgh to be near their children and grandson. Cantor’s father was born and raised in Pittsburgh and her grandson is sixth generation in Pittsburgh!

Cantor Heit may be reached at (412) 421-9715 ext. 123 or ryheit@yahoo.com.

Temple Sinai's Center for Jewish Learning is a place for children to discover their religion in a variety of ways with emphasis on the following:

  • Understanding the messages of Torah and their relevancy to today,
  • Discovering ways to feel close to God,
  • Realizing how behavior affects relationships,
  • Learning to repair the world through acts of loving kindness and the giving of tzedakah.

10th Grade Confirmation: Jewish learning continues beyond B’nei Mitzvah! Each year, our Tenth Grade students participate in a meaningful course of Jewish learning. Instructed by our clergy, our students struggle with their own theology, learn traditional and creative models of exploring those basic beliefs through prayer, and research the thoughts of others as they develop their own statement about God. They complete the year by leading Erev Shavuot (Eve of Shavuot) services together as a class, as we celebrate our students’ confirmed status as members of the adult Jewish community. The year includes a powerful Shabbat retreat and an on-going tzedakah commitment.

1th and 12th grade Seminar: 11th and 12th grade students join our clergy for deep learning and engaging conversations about Israel. These discussions will provide a basis for understanding the beginnings of the modern State of Israel, the origins of the various inter- and intra-religious conflicts, and the different visions of what Israel can and should be. With rising anti-Israel sentiment on college campuses, this seminar offers a Jewish framework for supporting Israel while grappling with some of its challenges.
